What you can see after a collision is the crumpled panel, and what actually drives the repair bill is everything behind it: a bent support, a cracked bracket, a sensor in the bumper, a headlight housing that has to come off to reach anything. A shop that gives you a confident number sight unseen is either padding it to be safe or is about to call you mid-repair with bad news.
Any real number comes after somebody has the car in front of them and, on a newer vehicle, often after the bumper cover is off.
What a supplement is
A supplement is the shop going back to the insurer for more money after finding damage the first estimate missed, and on anything past a light scuff it is normal, not a red flag. The first estimate is written from what is visible; the teardown is when the real scope shows up. What you want to hear from a shop up front is that they document with photos and handle the supplement process with the adjuster directly, so you are not the one relaying the argument between the shop and the insurance company.
You pick the shop
In Texas you choose the shop that fixes your car, and picking your own does not void anything, whatever a claims rep might imply. Insurers keep networks and will steer you, and those shops are often fine, but the choice is yours. What matters more than whose list a shop is on is whether they will handle the supplements when hidden damage turns up, because that is where a repair either gets done properly or gets cut short to hit a number.

Questions people ask about Collision Repair
How long will my repair actually take?
Parts availability sets the pace now more than labor: a bumper cover in stock is days, a back-ordered sensor bracket is the wait. A straight shop gives you a range, tells you what is on order, and updates you when supplements change the scope. Ask what the long pole is on yours.
OEM or aftermarket parts on my car?
It depends on your policy language and your preference, and you have a voice in it. Ask the shop what the estimate specifies, what they recommend for your particular repair, and what changes if you insist on OEM. Having that conversation before work starts beats discovering it on the invoice.
Is the repair work warrantied?
At a reputable shop, yes: workmanship and paint carry a written warranty, and the good ones stand behind it for as long as you own the car. Get it in writing and ask who honors it. A warranty is a promise about the future, so it is only as good as the shop still being here.
